Scientific & Common Names

The scientific name for this breed of dog is "Labrador Retriever - Canis lupus familiaris." The Black Labrador is commonly called the Black Lab, and traces his roots to the now-extinct St. John's Water Dog.

Characteristics

Standing 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 55 and 80 pounds when fully grown, the Black Lab is classified as a large breed. He has a short coat. This dog is very intelligent and -hard working, and possesses a lot of energy. The Black Lab falls in the working dog category.

Breeding

There are many reputable Black Lab breeders across the country. There are also several breed-specific rescues that help to re-home Black Labs and protect the breed. However, the Black Lab is one of the breeds of dogs found most in local shelters and humane societies, and is also the most difficult dog to find a home for, based simply on the color of his coat. If you choose to add a Black Lab to your family, consider rescuing a dog from your local shelter or humane society.

Behavior

The Black Lab is very smart and very active. This dog is very easy to train and does very well in agility competitions. He also has a lot of energy and can become destructive if you do not provide enough opportunities for exercise. Due to his large size, a large yard with a tall sturdy fence is a must. A daily walk is also advisable to keep him on his toes.

History

The Black Lab traces his roots back to the now-extinct St. John's Water Dog. The Black Lab as we know him today was bred sometime in the mid-19th century.

Present Status

The Labrador Retriever consistently makes the list of the top three most popular dogs in the United States. This dog is great for those who lead an active lifestyle and want a dog that can accompany them on all their adventures.
